What is ARFID and does my child have it?

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a mental health diagnosis given to children with feeding problems who are at nutritional risk. Unlike certain types of eating disorders, children with ARFID do not struggle with body image. A child with ARFID can present in many different ways! For example, they may be afraid to eat after a choking episode, they may limit their intake of food due to fear of stomach problems, or they may even stop eating certain foods due to food safety concerns.

Children with ARFID should be supported by a team consisting of a pediatrician, registered dietitian (like ourselves) and a psychologist. Depending on the scenario, they may also benefit from working with a feeding therapist and a gastroenterologist, among other specialists.

Here are some nutrition tips to help you get started in supporting your child with ARFID:

  • Offer your child regular chances throughout the day to eat a meal or a snack. Let your child know the menu in advance and always include a “safe” food.

  • Take baby steps by involving your child in discussions around food and nutrition. Discuss ways to make meals more approachable (i.e. deconstruct the mixed meal, offer a dip, include a preferred side dish, etc.).

  • Consider serving a nutrition shake or smoothie to help supplement your child's food intake. Talk to your registered dietitian about the different nutrition shake options.

Our dietitians are here to help you build your child’s ARFID team! We work to ensure children are able to meet their basic nutrient needs for good energy and growth, while also learning to enjoy mealtimes!
